Former Editor Patrick Cruywagen goes Land Rover celeb spotting at the autumn Newbury 4x4 Spares Day

If the summer Newbury 4x4 Spares Day is the biggest Land Rover autojumble in the world, then the autumn version of the event has to be the second biggest! It must be good, as Land Rover legend and the man behind the Dunsfold Collection, Philip Bashall, and about a dozen of his friends, arrived early on the Saturday afternoon to set up their trade stands for the Sunday.

You name it, Newbury has it

Once again, the indoor trading space was a sell-out. Was this because of the predicted rain? Thankfully after about an hour of trading on the Sunday the rain disappeared and the blue skies were back. So too were the Europeans, in their droves. One gentleman from France was on a mission to buy several engines.

The fabulous Houben brothers

You know that when the Houben brothers from Holland attend your event, you must be onto something good. For those who don’t know, they are the finest restorers of Series Land Rovers in all of Europe. We even had a visitor from Indonesia, Dr Sil, the man who was responsible for keeping the Land Rovers and human beings in working condition during the Last Overland expedition in 2019. The humble Doc is a bit of a Land Rover celebrity in Asia.

The aisles were pumping with people, with a few surprise appearances

I was on the LRM stand when columnist Thom Westcott made an unexpected but pleasant appearance. It was the first time in my nearly ten years at LRM that I have met Thom. You just never know what or who you are going to find at an LRM Spares Day and the latest autumn Newbury event was certainly no exception.
