Got a Freelander 1? Fancy a two-week driving adventure in Morocco? We’re tempted! : credit: © Driven to Extremes
Why not drive across the Sahara Desert for your holidays this year?

Friends and family may think you’re having a midlife crisis, but if you’ve always fancied taking on the original Dakar Rally route – all while supporting a good cause (injured military veterans suffering from PTSD) – Driven to Extremes SAHARA from 19 September to 6 October might be the challenge for you.

We think it’s very reasonably priced, too, with the entry fee for this two-week 4x4 driving adventure priced from just £895 per person. That includes a professional support crew (leader, doctor and mechanics) in expedition prepared 4x4s; Freelander 1 vehicle spares; return ferries from Spain to Morocco; nine nights camping and two nights hotel accommodation; UHF radio hire; branded desert shirts; satellite mapping and vehicle graphics.

Furthermore, Driven to Extremes SAHARA is delivered by Max Adventure, which has over 25 years’ experience of leading vehicle expeditions across extreme terrains, from the -60°C of Siberia to the  +50°C of the Taklamakan Desert, and 5600 meters above sea level, high in the Himalayas; the outfit has even acted as consultants to Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

Freelander 1 is de rigueur out here

You will need a 4x4 prepped for the desert – and as you might have guessed from the spares that are being brought along, a Freelander 1 Td4 is recommended. This could be an ideal opportunity to kick start a project too, with these vehicles now costing from as little as £500, but a purchase and preparation service is available if you’re pushed for time.

From the Algerian border to the Atlantic Ocean, you’ll get to battle your way across hundreds of miles of sand, rock and gravel through Morocco and enjoy highlights such as exploring Gara Medoua (as seen in 007’s Spectre), climb the towering sand dunes of Erg Chebbi, negotiate mountain passes of the High Atlas, race across the vast dried bed of Lake Iriki, wild camp under a star-lit Saharan sky and much more. Sounds pretty amazing to us.
